Siesta Key

World-famous white sand beaches

About Siesta Key

Siesta Key is an eight-mile barrier island off Sarasota, reached by two bridges and built around a beach that is repeatedly ranked among the best in the country. The sand is the reason: it is almost pure quartz, ground fine over millions of years, and it stays cool underfoot in August when nothing else in Florida does. Three public beaches divide the island. Siesta Beach anchors the north end with the pavilion, the courts and the crowds; Crescent Beach runs south of it in a quieter arc; and Turtle Beach, at the far south end, trades white sand for a coarser shell mix, deeper water close in, and the island's only campground. Point of Rocks, the limestone outcrop at the south end of Crescent, is where the snorkeling is. Residentially the island reads in three layers. The Gulf front is condominium territory, much of it built between the 1960s and the 1980s and held tightly by owners who have been here for decades. Behind it sit the canal-front single-family homes, most with a dock and Intracoastal access. Siesta Key Village on the north end keeps the whole thing walkable, low-rise and deliberately unpolished, which is a large part of why people who buy here stop looking anywhere else.
